Toyin Ajayi, Co-founder and CEO, Cityblock Health
Toyin Ajayi came to healthcare from both sides: her father was a physician in Nairobi during the AIDS epidemic, and she trained as a family doctor herself. She still practices, including with patients living with chronic and end-of-life needs.
At Cityblock, which she co-founded and leads, the patients are people American healthcare has historically struggled to serve: Medicaid members and people eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare. The model combines medical care, behavioral health and social services around the realities of people's lives.
Her argument about AI follows the same logic. Much of healthcare’s AI investment is going toward billing and revenue-cycle work rather than helping patients get care or helping clinicians understand them.
The question she’s forcing the industry to answer is uncomfortable: if the people who were last in line for every previous healthcare innovation are also last in line for AI, what exactly are we innovating for?
