The Wellth 30: People Don't Subscribe to a Platform

This profile is part of the Wellth 30, a curated recognition of the leaders building enduring brands, communities, and culture.

Marian Lee, Chief Marketing Officer, Netflix

Marian Lee’s marketing philosophy starts with something streaming companies sometimes forget: people don’t fall in love with platforms. They fall in love with stories.

That thinking has pushed Netflix marketing closer to the titles themselves, turning individual shows and films into cultural events rather than simply using them to sell the service.

The strategy now extends well beyond screens. Netflix House brings fandom into physical space. Major titles have become clothing, toys, food, books and experiences. Partnerships like the McDonald’s meal tied to KPop Demon Hunters turn entertainment into something people can participate in rather than just watch.

Lee also oversees global customer experience, making the relationship with the audience bigger than acquisition. The job is not to persuade someone that Netflix is worth their subscription.

It’s to give them something they can’t wait to talk about.
